Good morning all!  For quite some time now I have felt a strong tugging at my heart and what I am about to share with you is the result of that prompting.

It has been on my mind that EDEN, as a company,  needs to be doing something more to contribute in a positive way… Now, identifying what exactly “more” meant, took me on a bit of a spiritual search, both inwardly and outwardly. For a while I tossed around ideas trying to come up with something that would extend help and show love beyond the walls of my little studio and reach further than the pretty bottles and charming scents of products that would wander away to their new homes.   Many ideas came to mind, as we live in a time where there are needs everywhere one looks, but each local program I looked into left me feeling as though I was being pulled in another direction.  The standard practice of proceeds going to a specific cause was a good idea but there was something in me that wanted to meet a more direct need with the tools I had been given and the specific offerrings and capabilities of Eden Soap & Candle Co.

It was an article in a woman’s magazine given to me by a dear friend that was the catalyst to what is now the EDEN Haiti Initiative. The article was written by Ashley Judd, and chronicled her journey to a life devoted to activism in the poorest of countries and with the most impoverished of peoples.  She told of a life comfortable and blessed yet miserable before answering the call of her heart to serve.

She also spoke of her interactions with women and children in third world countries suffering from illnesses and disease due to a lack of simple necessities for health that we so often take for granted here in the United States.   She attributed her drive to aid, to the deep intrinsic desire to live life as an ongoing act of worship.  To show the love of Jesus and answer our most inward calling to help our fellow man, this is what we were designed to do and be, yet it is difficult to live this out when we live in a country where work and money and comfort seem to be the things we strive most for.  It is easy to forget that there is a world out there where men, women and children are sick and suffering and dying from preventable illnesses and rampant spread of infection due to their environment and living conditions.  Then a thought came to me, such an obvious thought that I am not sure why it was not one of my first: “Soap”.  As a spa goods company, soap is one of our most functional and available items.  Being reminded of the urgency for such an item on a global scale was all I needed to know what I was being called to do.  Almost immediately after this thought, another followed… “Contact Alice Bohlinger”.

Alice and Bryan Bohlinger were friends of my husband and I when we were living in Los Angeles and attending Reality LA Church.  The Bohlinger family was actively involved with an orphanage and non profit organization in Port Au Prince, Haiti.  They had endured the quake but were now facing the needs of a shattered city with orphaned children and spreading sickness.   Haiti is one of the poorest nations in the world and the devastating earthquake of 2010 left this country and it’s people in utter ruin and despair.  Tent cities are where many Haitians now live after their homes and communities were completely destroyed by the natural disaster.  Some American and Haitian public health specialists consider the diseases stemming from the buildup of human waste in the camps as the most pressing health threat in the city of Port Au Prince. Doctors have seen a spike in illnesses and diarrheal disease like typhoid, cholera and shigellosis, which arise from contaminated food or water.   Impoverished people in Haiti die every day from acute respiratory infection and diarrheal disease because they have no soap. The death toll is staggering. Each year more than five million lives are lost globally to these diseases with the majority of deaths being among children less than five years old. Studies have shown that simple hand washing substantially reduces the spread of these diseases.

Child Hope is a non profit organization that is responsible for not only the establishment of Maison de Lumiere (The Lighthouse) Orphanage, but also a number of missions and educational programs for the impoverished children of Haiti and continuous earthquake relief work for a nation in dire need.  Every week Child Hope ventures to the surrounding tent cities, delivering sanitary and medical supplies necessary for survival.

After speaking with Bill Manassero, the president of Child Hope International, and learning of their ongoing need for soap, I am excited to unveil a new program we are beginning here at EDEN Soap & Candle Co..  Effective immediately for every bar of soap sold, EDEN will donate 1 bar to Child Hope Orphanage in Port Au Prince, Haiti.

I would like to invite you, our valued customer, to join forces with us by becoming a partner in supplying Haiti with an essential yet often times unobtainable need.  By choosing to purchase your soap from EDEN, you are actively helping stop the spread of bacterial infection and disease in this impoverished country.  By purchasing EDEN Aromatherapy Soap Bars as gifts, you are not only gifting a high quality product, you are also giving the gift of charity and aid where it is needed most and allowing a child to wash with soap who may not have been able to otherwise.

New product lines are being developed to allow more economical options for purchasing opportunity, such as all natural soap wedding and shower favors with customizable color wrapping or wax seal monogramming available.  Your prayer, support and word of mouth is greatly appreciated as we begin this new endeavor and partnership with Child Hope International and the children of Haiti.  We will begin shipping boxes of soap on a monthly basis with the hope that over a period of time, it could become a large scale initiative, meeting the needs of many.  EDEN has committed to paying all of the shipping expenses as well so that there is zero burden for Child Hope through this program.

To read more about Child Hope International, please visit their website at www.childhope.org.  They have an abundance of information on their ministry, the orphanage, their school, the children and the community aid programs that they spearhead.  Updated lists of time-specific needs as well as prayer requests can be found online as well.

Some Quick facts on Haiti:

42% of Haiti’s population is children under 14 years of age.

The capital of Haiti is Port-au-Prince, the epicenter of the deadly 2010 quake.

Haiti is one of poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere. Eighty percent of residents live in poverty, according to the CIA World Factbook.

Haiti is one of the most densely populated and least developed countries in the Western Hemisphere.

Summer Skin

Well, the sun drenched days of summer and swimsuits are just around the corner! If you are anything like me, breaking out the bikini is a love/hate ritual… Mostly love, but it usually takes me a few days of soaking up the sun and establishing a decent tan, before I completely embrace the concept of barely there garments.  Summer is a favorite season for many, but it requires a little extra TLC in the skincare department if one wants to maintain healthy, beautiful skin all season long.  Winter is similarly taxing, but atleast for that season we are bundled up… dry, dull or blemished skin is hard to hide in a modern day bikini and direct sunlight .

For many, summer means more time outdoors, later nights, and for some, an increase in alcohol consumption perhaps?  These factors, along with countless others can take a toll on the appearance and function of your skin, whether immediately, or over time.  EDEN BODY offers products for every skin type and every season… Below is a run down of some of our most effective and most popular sensory blends for summer!  Get your skin glowing and ready to flaunt by using our intense Sea Salt & Essential Oil Scrubs, Essential Oil Body Repair Lotions and Aromatherapy Cold Processed Soap Bars!  The combinations listed below are available in all 3 forms and work best when used together as a daily regimen.  You’ll be amazed at the results!

LEMON LAVENDER: A refreshing and herbaceous aroma

Lemon essential oil performs as an anti-septic and tonic.  It cleanses while brightening pale, dull skin and it even combats aging by reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Lemon essential oil strengthens and invigorates the the mind and body, can help bring down fever, relieve throat infections, bronchitis, asthma and flu.  It draws a rich blood supply to the skin, increasing heat to the tissues to aid the body in absorption of properties from creams, lotions etc. Lemon essential oil is also ant-rheumatic.

Lavender essential oil has a lovely earthy scent (unlike the sweet, floral fragrance immitations).  This miracle oil exhibits, calming and soothing effects that help counteract stress hormones. It is a documented anti-depressant and used to treat insomnia and anxiety, it soothes heart palpitations and lowers blood pressure.  On the skin, lavender essential oil calms and nourishes, especially dry or acne prone skin. It is an ideal treatment for sunburn care and also works as insect repellant.

PATCHOULI ORANGE: An enchanting citrus aroma

Patchouli Essential Oil: This oil reduces stress and other nervous disorders, it is also a superb tissue regenerator, which helps to stimulate the growth of new skin cells thus aiding in the prevention of scarring. Treats rough, cracked and extremely dehydrated skin. Used to treat acne, dermatitis, eczema, oily skin, wounds, scar tissue, varicose veins and wrinkles. It is also one of the strongest natural aphrodisiacs available (Vanilla essential oil too)… Used in over 50% of men’s perfumes as well as a quarter to 1/3 of all women’s perfumes.

Blood Orange is a refreshing and poignant citrus scent.  It has been classified as anti-cancer thanks to the presence of D-limonene, which is a super-nutrient that occurs in Orange Essential Oil and has been studied extensively for its ability to prevent cellular mutations and combat cancerous tumor growth.   On the skin this oil promotes the production of collagen as well as increases the blood flow to the skin. It is helpful at soothing dry, irritated skin as well as acne-prone skin. It is excellent for treating calluses. Orange essential oil is an anti-depressant and promotes good digestion.

ROSEMARY MINT:  The ultimate cooling combination

Rosemary essential oil has a brisk, refreshing aroma.  It increases memorization, stimulates mental activity and is a good remedy for depression, mental fatigue and forgetfulness. On the skin, this oil treats aches and pains by increasing circulation to help relieve excess muscle tension.   Regular massage with this oil helps in toning your skin and removing dryness. It is also considered as a beauty aid for the face and treats cough and cold symptoms.

Most of us know the smell of peppermint, a clean, strong aroma.  This oil has a cool, tingling sensation when applied to the skin (ever use icy-hot muscle relaxing cream or vicks vapo-rub?) making it irresistible in the summer heat.  Peppermint essential oil works as a pain reliever, it is cooling in nature and therefore helps reduce fever.  It also improves concentration and memory, making it excellent for mental fatigue, apathy and depression. Peppermint essential oil treats nausea and headache, as well as respiratory ailments.  On the skin, it’s slightly astringent property opens and cleans pores while its scent evokes a sense of calm and tranquility.  IT relieves skin irritation and itchiness and also helps to reduce  inflammation. Peppermint essential oil is used to treat dermatitis and acne, it nourishes dull skin and improves oily skin.

EDEN Day & Night Facial Cream

Hello EDEN family, we have some exciting news!  If you love our Body Repair Lotion, you are going to LOVE our new Hypoallergenic Day & Night Facial Cream (Coming very soon)!  This Moisturizer consists of jojoba and sweet almond oils… No fragrance, no dyes and parabin free.  A dream come true for those with sensitive or acne prone skin!  This cream also has anti-aging benefits thanks to the line fighting power of sweet almond oil and the anti oxidant properties of jojoba oil.
As someone with incredibly sensitive skin, formulating a cream that was truly effective and luxurious, yet gentle, was crucial to me.  While working in the modeling industry and doing runway shows for designers such as Giorgio Armani, Oscar De La Renta, Alexander Mcqueen, Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan, Versace, Gucci, Balenciaga, Zac Posen, Monique Lhuillier,  etc… my face was subjected to copious amounts of makeup and product on a daily basis, some good, but many of which wreaked havoc on my skin.  Due to the fact that my job was dependent upon a clear complexion it was critical that my skin care regimen be somewhat of a miracle worker.  After trying numerous products, I settled on a European line (that shall remain nameless) and was spending upwards of $100 for 1 oz. of serum.  Now, it was indeed pricey, but it also worked and for the first time I was able to witness, first hand, the difference between the cheaper products with artificial fragrances, dyes and drying agents and the high end cosmetic creams and treatments. I was a skeptic at first but upon seeing the incredible results of these moisturizers and oils, let me tell you, skin care products that actually work, are worth their weight in gold!

After hanging up the heels and retiring from my previous profession, it became increasingly difficult to justify continuing to spend such money on 1 oz. of product when my livelihood was no longer hanging in the balance of perfect skin and I could no longer classify this part of my budget as a tax write-off.  It proved just as difficult however, to ween myself off of this wondrous regimen that I had now become accustomed to. After being exposed to true “skincare”, there was no going back to mid range or grocery store moisturizers with their flashy labels, empty promises and greasy applications.  I had seen the light and was indeed spoiled.  Now as the owner of a luxury spa goods company the solution to my problem seemed obvious: develop your own regimen!  It seemed like a simple resolution,  but never before had I ventured beyond the realm of body care and home aromas.

All EDEN body products up to this point have been intense, full body treatments, loaded with wonderfully nourishing oils and intense therapies (many of you who have tried our Body Repair Lotions, have become devout users and know what I am talking about).  The idea of formulating something strictly for the face was challenging.  The face can be a tricky thing, as many of you know, and there are so many products out there that contribute to detrimental skin conditions (dryness, oiliness, acne, etc…) due to their cheap and artificial ingredients, all the while claiming to help.  I began self-testing and establishing a formula for my own personal use.  Upon seeing and feeling the results over time, the SAME results I had seen with the $100 cream, I decided I could not keep this little secret to myself!  It’s amazing the outcome you can get when quality ingredients are used, knowledge and science are applied properly and corners are not cut (a philosophy EDEN Soap & Candle Co. stands by with every single product).  A simple concept but absent in many commercial lines today.  Thus, I introduce to you our new EDEN Facial Cream for Day & Night (for both men & women).   My goal in creating this product was to develop a daily/nightly moisturizing treatment that was truly healing for people with sensitive skin (like me) while at the same time long lasting, healthful and luxurious… All at a price that wouldn’t break the bank.  I can confidently say, we have achieved this, and I am beyond excited to share it with you.  I  believe so much in this product and it’s effectiveness that I am fighting the urge to mail it out to every home for every person to try because of its life changing ability.  I look forward to hearing what you think!

Read on to learn the benefits of jojoba oil, which is one of the key ingredients within our face cream…

Jojoba oil is one of the finest cosmetic ingredients in the world and often used in anti-aging skincare. Its excellent emollient and moisturizing properties – coupled to its oxidative stability properties make it one of the world’s top lipid (oil) cosmetic ingredients around!

One of the most intriguing things about this oil is that it operates almost the same way human sebum (oil) does. Even more interesting, Jojoba oil has been shown to work well with acne prone skin. When applied to the skin, Jojoba oil balances sebum levels and also possesses anti-bacterial properties that prevent breakouts.

Since jojoba is completely compatible with sebum, it forms a very thin, non-greasy protective layer that binds to the skin.  This partially porous layer provides exceptional skin respiration and moisture control.  Unlike greasy pore-clogging materials such as petrolatum, mineral oils and some lanolin products, jojoba provides an absolutely non-tacky, non-greasy “dry” emolliency.

Jojoba serves as an excellent moisturizing agent with exceptional spread and lubricity, and leaves a rich velvety non-oily feel on the skin while retarding water loss and enhancing the flexibility and suppleness of the skin – making it perfect for anti-aging skincare.  Additionally, because jojoba is rapidly absorbed, the pores and hair follicles can remain open and thus maintain their proper functioning ability.  Its ability to prevent moisture loss makes Jojoba oil ideal for use on dry skin, eczema and other problematic skin conditions.

When shopping for high quality, hand made bath and body care products, look for the presence of essential oils rather than “fragrance” in your items.  Essential oils are all natural and nourishing to the skin and the mind with varying health-promoting properties (aka aromatherapy).  Aromatherapy is a branch of plant based medicine that has become increasingly popular due to scientific advancements showing it’s pro-health effectiveness. As a result of this desirability, many companies are now using chemical fragrance oils and terms that  will mislead customers (knowingly or unknowingly) about the contents of their products.  In order for a product to have real aromatherapeutic benefits it must be made with true essential oils.  In the same sense, in order for a product to be “all natural” it cannot contain any amount of synthetic fragrance oil.

Fragrance can irritate skin, interfere with the properties of natural ingredients and oils and has absolutely zero health benefits.  Many people are willing to pay a higher price for hand made, natural skincare because they assume they are getting a much higher quality product.  When synthetic fragrances are used as a means to cut cost and cut corners, the product’s value and effectiveness is cut immensely as well.  Fragrance is to be expected when purchasing commercial soaps and grocery store bath and body care, but there are also a number of small companies that advertise hand made, cold processed soaps, yet  fragrance oil is used as a much cheaper alternative to pure essential oils, thus rendering a non-all natural product.  In many cases these soaps are deceiving to the customer due to their “natural” appearance.

Unlike fragrance, using essential oils properly in product manufacturing requires a substantial amount of knowledge on aromatherapy blending and traditional and holistic medicine, this is a precise and learned science.  Fragrance is not necessarily a horrible thing, it is used in a number of household products, but when it comes to what we put on our skin and absorb into our bodies, it is important to know the distinct differences between chemicals and natural therapies (this knowledge also helps the consumer know that they are getting their money’s worth when buying artisan soap and spa products).  Next time you are contemplating the purchase of a bar of cold processed soap or lotion, be sure to ask whether it was made with essential oil or fragrance oil, and be sure the price is reflective of the answer.  Our entire line of EDEN Body is 100% fragrance free, TRULY pure and natural.  Those wonderful aromas you smell are the high quality essential oils, artfully blended to create some of the most effective spa grade products on the market today.  Not only do they smell incredible, they nourish, soothe and clean!  You’ll notice a substantial difference immediately.  Read about their properties here: http://www.edensoapandcandle.com/essentials.html
